The Selection Committee

All decisions on selection will be taken by the Selection Committee where relevant, overseen by the Club Captain. This consists of:

  • Club Captain & Head of Selection
  • 1st XI Captain
  • 2nd XI Captain
  • 3rd XI Captain
  • 4th XI Captain
  • Bank Blitz T20 Captain
  • Midweek XI Captain
  • Sunday XI Captain
  • Super Sixes Indoor Captain

The Club welcomes the active involvement and engagement of its players in decisions. Any player unhappy with selection decisions may ask for an explanation from the Selection Committee, via either the appropriate captain or escalated to the Club Captain. However, we request that you put the needs of the Club as a whole before your own, and agree to abide by the decision for a particular weekend. This is to ensure disruption across all teams is minimised.

General Selection Criteria

For all teams, the following criteria shall always be applied:

  1. The key consideration will be payment of annual subscriptions and being fully up to date with match fees. This is essential for any members club and all are reminded of their responsibility to do so.
  2. Other criteria considered will be ability, current form, general conduct and attitude, previous availability, attendance at training and general club contribution.
  3. All players should have a role (batting, bowling etc) in the side. This is at the discretion of captains and may change depending on the match situation, but should not be a regular occurrence.
  4. Full paying members will be prioritised over social members, which is a largely non playing category.
  5. All types of member will be prioritised over ringers. At no point should a captain encourage a member to not play so that a non-member can be selected instead. Members have paid for the right to play.
  6. New players to the club will be considered as trial members until the end of May only, or for two games (whichever comes first). This only applies to individuals who have never played a game for the club previously.

Saturday XIs

In addition to the general selection criteria above, the following shall be considered for Saturday XIs by the Selection Committee. For the Saturday XIs this shall normally be decided upon by the Saturday captains, but overall responsibility lies with the Club Captain.

Saturday XIs Selection Policy

  1. Decisions will be made primarily for the benefit of the club and success of the 1st XI. After this, the Selection Committee will seek to look after the needs of its individual playing members.
  2. Whilst priority is given to the 1st XI, the balance of other teams is also of upmost importance. This includes the balancing of qualities such that each player has a role within the team for which they are selected. Captains from lower teams can question selection should it lead to an imbalance in their team (e.g. no competent wicket-keeper, insufficient bowling etc).
  3. Every attempt will be made by the club to accommodate the desires of individuals. However, players are asked to support the missions of the club and each team and understand that their personal desires may, at times, be secondary to the fulfilment of these missions.
  4. Members should be aware that their selection for a particular team depends upon and is frequently governed by the availability of other players.
  5. The Selection Committee will only select players eligible for the relevant league and where applicable is obliged to adhere to league rules regarding the amount of matches a member has played in higher teams.
  6. Captains will normally stay with their team unless there are exceptional circumstances. Vice Captains shall be treated as other players except in the absence of the captain.
  7. Captains will be assigned members for whom they are provisionally responsible at the start of the season to provide all members with a known contact point. This may change during the course of the season if players transfer between teams for a longer period of time.
  8. Players shall not usually move up or down more than one XI unless in exceptional circumstances.
  9. If a player is moved from their team of the previous week, their regular team captain should communicate with them separately to give an explanation for the change.
  10. Once selected and informed, a player who refuses to play for the team in which they have been selected, without good reason, may forfeit their rights to future selection.
  11. Playing members who are not selected for a Saturday fixture will be given priority for Sunday selection, if available.

Saturday XIs Selection Process

  • By 7pm on Monday - player availability deadline.
  • By 10pm on Monday - Club Captain / individual captains make other members of the Selection Committee aware of their provisional team member availability. This will help determine whether additional effort is required by all captains to source players if availability is low.
  • By 10pm on Tuesday - captains should summarise the expected contribution of individuals (e.g. bat / bowler / wicket-keeper) during team selection. In doing so, captains should bear in mind the need to give players (and especially colts) a reasonable game on the field.
  • By 10pm on Wednesday - publish provisional team selections. The Club Captain shall liaise with the Sunday XI captain regarding any unselected players.
  • If there is a deficit of players then all captains should try to source additional players. This should not just be left to the lowest XI.

Saturday XIs Selection Additional Guidelines

  • Should a player become available after the availability deadline, they should only be selected if a drop-out occurs.
  • Non-members may only be selected if there is a deficit of players by10pm on Tuesday.
  • Should a player drop out after selection; the captain of the team should ideally try to find alternatives elsewhere, but may also select from the team immediately below in consultation with the Selection Committee. This will apply until 10am on Saturday for the 1st XI, and until 5pm on Friday for all other XIs.
  • Captains do not have an obligation to provide a player to fill a vacancy at times later than those specified, although they may choose to do so in the interests of the club as a whole.

  3. Members should be aware that their selection depends upon and is frequently governed by the availability of other players.
